WAR on DRUGS!

Juan lives in the mountains in South America where he owns some land.
It's good land, but the labor is hard and he just makes enough to maintain his family.

Once upon a time his village was visited by a foreigner called Sam, who asked the farmers to stop growing coca.
His country had big problems with a drug that was made out of the plants.
This question caused some confusion because the villagers couldn't understand that the leaves they used as a medicine for thousands of years, were causing that much problems in such a far away country.
Also they found it a bit of a dilemma to stop growing the coca leaves, since lately they got such good prices selling them to another foreigner.
Juan told Sam about his dream: how he planned to use the extra money he earned with his field of coca to send his son to school so, maybe, his son would become a doctor or a teacher.

But Sam had it all worked out, he told the farmers they could grow coffee instead, and Sam's country would buy their coffee and they would even make more money. They would even earn enough money to send all of their children to school, just like the children did in Sam's country.
A lot of farmers seemed to agree with Sam, so they started to grow coffee which was more work than coca, but it also seemed to be more promising ...

After a few years the villagers had their first harvest of coffee, but times had changed. Sam's country boycotted Juan's country because they didn't do exactly as being told. Politics, but the result was that Sam's country didn't want to buy the coffee anymore.

That was fifteen years ago ... the coffee plants vanished and the coca fields returned like if they had never been gone. In fact there are even more fields now then there were twenty years ago.
Juan has gotten old and now his son has taken over his dream; that one day his new-born will be able to go to school and become a doctor ... or a teacher.

Though I just made this story up, it is based on true facts.
Next time I'll tell you boys and girls about Morocco, hashish, and oranges.
